Lawn Care Services
Emerald Lawn Care offers the following services, all of which are custom designed to your particular needs. We use only slow release granular products, unlike some of the national lawn care companies that use liquid fertilizers so they can apply multiple products in a single mixture. They only need to walk across the lawn once which reduces their labor cost. We use slow release granular fertilizer to provide steady availability of nutrients, reduce the chance of burning your lawn, and it reduces leaching. It is more work but we know it is worth it.
Lawn Care Programs
Conventional Fertilization
We use the highest quality mineral fertilizers. They are fast acting and provide a great result. Mineral fertilizers also tend to be less expensive.
Organic Based Fertilization
This program utilizes mineral and organic components. You will get a quick green-up in the spring because the mineral components are not dependent on soil temperature. The organic components enrich the soil, providing constant access to nutrients and no leaching.
Organic Fertilization
In this program we offer strictly organic products, generally based on poultry waste with the goal of soil enrichment. With proper soil feeding you will get a great result and Mother Nature will thank you for it too. This program requires a little patience (2-3 years) because organic products are not as fast acting.
Whichever approach you select, we recommend four applications: Early Spring (fertilizer includes Crabgrass Preventer) 3/15-5/1, Summer 6/15-8/1, Late Summer 8/1-9/15, and Late Fall 11/1-12/15.
Weed Control
Broadleaf Weed Control
These are liquid applications and are generally done in May and again in September. They are the most effective way to deal with Dandelions, Creeping Charlie, and a host of other broadleaf weeds. It will not work on crabgrass, coarse fescue, and the other grassy weeds. There are currently no effective organic weed control products available.
Total Control
For tall weeds/overgrowth and unwanted turf, Emerald Lawn Care can eliminate all vegetation (broadleaf and grasses) with a broad-spectrum herbicide. This generally requires two weeks, depending on weather conditions. Reseeding or sodding can be done immediately after the treated plant material has been removed.
Pest Control
Grub Control
There are two approaches to grub control – preventative and curative. Prevention is usually done in June and early July and curative is done in late July and August. Both are granular insecticide applications that should be watered in shortly after application. The preventative application is less expensive and also limits damage to your lawn, which can be extensive, primarily from skunks and raccoons digging up your yard looking for dinner.
Insecticide/Fungicide Applications
We can treat any lawn, tree, or shrub pest/disease. Early identification makes successful treatment easier. As soon as you see a problem, call us. These treatments can be granular, liquid, or injected. We are big supporters of tree injection because of its effectiveness and reduced environmental impact and use Mauget products (www.mauget.com).
Foundation Spraying
To prevent bugs from entering your home, create a barrier by spraying the foundation and soil around your home. Application of a contact insecticide, two feet up the side of the home and on the soil surface two feet out from the foundation, will stop bugs from entering. Applications are generally effective for 30 days.
Dormant Oil Application
Mealy bugs and scale can be very difficult to control. One method that can help eliminate these destructive pests is dormant oil spraying. As the name implies, lightweight oil is sprayed on the tree and coats the mealy bugs and/or scale that over-winter on the branches. The oil encases the pest, preventing them from breathing. The application is usually made in early spring as close to bud break as possible.
Antitranspirant Application
Primarily for evergreens but also for some deciduous trees and shrubs, this application provides a protective coating against the wind and/or road salts, which dry out and kill plants. This is particularly important for evergreens that are newly planted or located close to a road. Protect those expensive arborvitaes! One application is usually done mid-November to early December and it is helpful if a second application can be made during a thaw late January to early February.

Other Services
Core Aeration/Seeding
Core aeration is the removal of soil plugs from your lawn for the purpose of reducing compaction, breaking up the thatch layer, and promoting root development. It also aids new seed growth. The best time to aerate is fall but it can also be done in the spring. The quality and price of this service varies greatly among lawn care providers. Emerald Lawn Care uses the finest equipment, removing numerous plugs per square foot of lawn. We don’t miss difficult areas and are careful to cover the entire surface. When core aeration is being done with seeding, we aerate once, seed the lawn, and aerate a second time. Your lawn will look terrible when we leave but wonderful in a month! There are lawn care companies offering core aeration for $50 or less – be careful, you usually get what you pay for.
If you are always fighting diseases in your lawn, aeration is a good way to help resolve this problem. Using disease resistant seed blends helps establish new grasses in your lawn, reducing the need to apply expensive (and frequently temporary) fungicides. Aeration of your turf is probably the single most important thing you can do to have a beautiful lawn.
Note: If you have an irrigation system and/or electronic dog fence you must carefully mark the sprinkler heads and/or wires. Emerald Lawn Care is not responsible for damage to these systems
Flight Control
Repellants are applied to areas being frequented by geese to encourage their departure.
